PD Chat
#######
By Gary Spiteri
As you know I'll the new PD librarian and I want to make some changes
to the existing library.
So far I have experimented with an "online" type catalog, a new price
for Disks of the Month (DOM), and last month DOM's with a definite theme and
LZH'ed.
What I'm trying to do is find what's best for _you_ not for me, but
_you_, the people who ultimately buy the disks I compile. The PD library is
the biggest source of income that ACE has, without PD sales ACE would go
broke. I want to improve what is already a very good library and make it even
better. The only way I can do this is by innovating, taking risks and
experimenting with new ideas, acting on the results.
This is where you come in - I need your feedback, I need your support.
I can blindly go and change the library overnight, no-one will buy any disks
and the club goes broke. I don't want this to happen, and I trust that you
don't either. So please get involved with the club, with _your_ club, and help
make it what you want it to be.
One of the first risks I took was reducing the price of the Disk of
the Month by over 50% and setting up a subscription system for those who don't
normally come to meetings. In the past the Disk of the Month was compiled and
sold at meetings for $7 and later sold in the normal library. I give you the
opportunity to buy a disk of PD software at $1 more than the price of the disk
itself or have a disk sent to you, once a month at 50c more than the cost of
the disk.
As you can see, the margin to break even is very fine, to generate the
same amount of money as the older $7 DOM's were making I have to sell more
disks. The first month we did, the second we didn't, this next meeting will
help determine the schemes furture. If by December the lower priced DOM scheme
is not a success, I will be going to the committee to ask if we can change
back to the older system. The price will more than double, country members
will again miss out, again, the DOM will be an exclusive luxury. I don't want
this to happen, the subscription scheme was suggested by a country member and
is leveled at giving some support to those country members who cannot get to
meetings. If you want the scheme to stay, say so by using it.
The next thing I'm going to do is change the catatories within the
library, this will begin once I finish my semester in late November. I need to
know if I'm doing the right thing, please tell me. To this end I include
possibly the last of the PDUPDATES for the current catalog. If the changes go
ahead, this catalog will stand until the new catalog is released early
next year.
Please rememer what I have said about feedback, I can be contacted at
meetings, telephone of (02) 603 2990, letters addressed c/o ACE, and via the
modem on either ACE BBS or FidoNET netmail to 3:712/520.5...
Until we meet again......
Gary.
